At a Glance

Over the last 46 years, the Institute has been able to establish well-equipped laboratories for testing various packaging materials and packages at its principle laboratory at Mumbai as well as its regional centres at Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi and Hyderabad. These laboratories are well equipped and up-to-date in technology, with financial assistance from of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India.

The Institute’s laboratories are accredited by NABL as per ISO/IEC: 17025. The laboratories are also recognised by the Bureau of Indian Standards and the DSIR (Department of Science and Industrial Research). The laboratories extend testing facilities to various industries as per National and International standards as the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), International Standards Organisation (ISO), British Standards (BS), American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) and others.

The Institute is the only body authorised by the Directorate General of Shipping and Directorate of Civil Aviation, Government of India to issue UN Certificate for exports of dangerous goods by sea and air.


The laboratory has the facility for testing over 300 parameters of packaging materials and packages.

 
 

Activities

Outline of activities include:

  • The tests relating to mechanical, chemical, environmental, optical and physico-chemical properties.
  • Testing for transport worthiness of packages for domestic and overseas distribution.
  • Testing of transport packages including intermediate bulk containers for the carriage of dangerous goods for export – IMDG and ICAO.
  • In-laboratory training programmes.
  • Training programmes on testing and quality control.
